My phone speaker sounds muffled like I'm underwater

Podcasts are fine on headphones but every hands-free call embarrasses you on loudspeaker. Pocket lint isn't glamorous but it's probably the culprit. Would you pay for speaker cleaning and repair without sending your phone away for a week?
